Job Summary:

An asphalt foreman is responsible for overseeing all aspects of an asphalt paving crew on a construction project, including supervising workers, ensuring quality standards are met, managing equipment, scheduling tasks, and maintaining safety protocols while laying asphalt on roads, parking lots, or other surfaces, often working closely with project managers to meet project deadlines and specifications

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Crew Supervision:
    • Assign tasks to crew members based on their skills and project requirements.
    • Train and mentor new crew members on proper asphalt paving techniques.
    • Monitor crew performance and address any safety or quality concerns.
    • Manage daily time sheets and ensure efficient use of labor.
  • Project Management:
    • Review project plans and specifications to understand the scope of work.
    • Coordinate with project managers to ensure project timelines are met.
    • Estimate material needs and manage inventory of asphalt, aggregate, and other supplies
    • Communicate with subcontractors and asphalt plant operators regarding material delivery
  • Quality Control:
    • Perform quality checks on asphalt placement, including thickness and compaction levels
    • Ensure compliance with project specifications and industry standards
    • Identify and address any quality issues during the paving process
  • Equipment Operation:
    • Operate heavy machinery like pavers, rollers, and graders when necessary
    • Perform daily equipment inspections and maintenance checks to ensure proper functionality
  • Safety Compliance:
    • Enforce all safety protocols and procedures on the worksite
    • Conduct safety meetings with crew members to address potential hazards
    • Investigate and report any accidents or safety incidents

  • Experience: Several years of experience in asphalt paving operations, including previous supervisory roles 
  • Knowledge: Thorough understanding of asphalt paving techniques, quality standards, and safety regulations 
  • Leadership abilities: Ability to motivate and manage a team effectively 
  • Technical skills: Familiarity with operating heavy construction equipment 
  • Communication skills: Clear and concise communication with crew members, project managers, and other stakeholders.

  • Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment: Constantly
  • The ability to travel regionally or nationally: Rarely
